Request for Proposals for 2020 Home Health Care Research Funding

The Alliance is excited to announce the opening of the 2020 request for proposal period for home health focused research funding.

RFP Responses: Please send responses in electronic PDF format to by no later than Friday, December 27, 2019. Only complete responses will be considered.

Background: The Alliance for Home Health Quality and Innovation (AHHQI) seeks to sponsor a research project to help advance home health care and may seek to improve care delivery at home through quality and innovation. Funding will be awarded up to $125,000 maximum. Multiple projects may be funded if they do not exceed the total funding allocated for all projects of $125,000.

Objectives: To further research and of home health care, with possible focus on areas identified in the published paper, “The Future of Home Health Care: A Strategic Framework for Optimizing Value” (copy may be provided upon request for reference) and as identified by key thought leaders in home health care:

  • Patient and Person-Centered Care
  • Technology
  • Home Health Workforce
  • Clinical Innovation
  • Disease-Specific Intervention

Additional topics related to Payment and Delivery Reform are acceptable as well, including the following examples:

  • Patient Driven Groupings Model (PDGM)
  • Medicare Advantage
  • Value-Based Purchasing
  • Bundled Payments

Methodology: The research project may employ a mixed methods approach, including but not limited to: interviews with thought leaders and stakeholders, case studies, surveys, secondary data analysis, and/or clinical trials.

Deliverables: Upon completion, we require following deliverables:

  • Final report that summarizes the findings of the study
  • Article publishable in a peer-reviewed journal;
  • Key recommendations for home health care providers;
  • PowerPoint presentation summarizing the research, findings, and recommendations for future utilization; and
  • At least one Capitol Hill briefing to present the findings and facilitate a discussion.

Qualifications: The researchers will work with the Alliance’s Research Work Group, which is comprised of thought leaders and researchers from the home health community, to complete the project. Researchers with the following competencies/experience are preferred:

  • Health services research;
  • Qualitative research;
  • Quantitative research; and
  • Previous research on home health care.

Application Outline

Please provide the following information:

  1. Specific Aims of the Study (1 page in total)
  2. Research Plan: This should include a summary of the overall strategy, the methodology, and analyses to be used to accomplish the aims of the project. (3 pages in total)
  3. Bibliography
  4. A summary of your experience in or with home health or home-based care (1 page)
  5. Details of the proposed research team (including biosketches for each person), with a clear statement of his/her intended contribution to the proposed study.
  6. Project budget with a detailed breakdown of costs.
  7. Timeline: Our plan is to select researchers by March 31, 2020 and to kickoff work within the second quarter of 2020. Given this start plan, please provide a timeline for the project with dates for completion of the deliverables. Projects will be expected to be completed within an 18 month timeframe or sooner.
